As part of the Photography Research Group’s visiting speaker programme for 2016/17, the New Contemporaries talk series provides a platform for the work and ideas of a new generation of young, emerging photographers, curators and publishers in the UK. The talks series is curated by Plymouth alumni Robert Darch, who graduated from our MFA Photography programme earlier this year and who is part of this new generation. As Robert says: ‘New Contemporaries brings together five prominent speakers who are all actively engaged with the photographic medium in varying contexts. All have well defined photographic practices, but collectively they also represent a tendency in contemporary photography to work in different ways across genres and disciplines, which may involve them in aspects of publishing, curating and writing. We find ourselves in an increasingly connected world and although there is an emphasis on new technologies and social media as platforms for showcasing work, there is still a strong relationship between this and analogue processes in the making and curating of photography, and in publishing and self-publishing.’
