Annie Lai

Annie Lai is a Chinese fashion photographer born in New Zealand and based in London now. Coming from a mixed cultural background, she found a subtle balance between Asian and western aesthetics in her work. Her photography celebrates the art of intimacy with an eye for fleeting, unique moments.
My ongoing series ‘In Between’ started in 2018, I photographed different young Chinese diasporas in their temporary homes in London. The project fuelled a sentiment of self-discovery, struggle and belonging mirrored by my own experiences. Most of the women in this project left their hometowns at coming of age, while assimilating to integrate into a completely different society, they live and grow resiliently. Being constantly in flux, I want to capture the moments when they are at ease within the confines of the intimate spaces.
