Cristian Ordóñez (b. 1976) is a Chilean artist based in Toronto. His work explores the parallels between ideas such as memory and belonging, territory and architecture, vernacular and mundane. These themes intersect working with various media between printed matter, film photography and graphic design, with a strong interest in processes and photobooks.

In recent years, Cristian’s work has won the Edward Burtynsky Grant (Canada) and the Urbanautica Institute Award (Italy). His series “Frequency” was also shortlisted in the Getxophoto Pause! Open Call (Spain) in 2023, nominated for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award (Germany) in 2022, recently exhibited in a solo show at Galería Animal (Chile) and self-published as a photobook in April 2023. His work “On Trial”, published by acb-press (Australia) in 2022, is part of collections that include the National Gallery of Canada, the National Library of Australia and the Gabriela Cendoya Bergareche Collection, at the San Telmo Museum (Spain). His recent work “Valle”, created in the Huasco Valley in Atacama, Chile as part of a collaborative project with Athabasca University scholar Dr. Eduardo Ordonez-Ponce, was recently part of a group show in Berlin and will be exhibited this year at the Rencontres de la photography in Gaspésie, Québec.

Ordóñez has led workshops and courses at VU Photo (Québec), OCAD University, and Gallery 44 (Toronto), and currently divides his time working on his photography and publications, editing and designing with his publisher Another Earth (Vermont-Toronto), and collaborating with architects, academics, artists and publishers.
